Hyperthyroidism, like Hypothyroidism, is a disease that affects the thyroid. The disease develops when the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. Some other diseases that lead to Hypothyroidism are Graves disease, Thyroid Nodules, and Thyroiditis.
Some symptoms of Hyperthyroidism, and signs that you should watch out for are:
- Nervousness, mood changes, weakness and fatigue
- Hand tremors; a rapid, pounding and irregular heartbeat; shortness of breath, even when resting
- Excessive sweating, and warm, flushed skin that may be itchy.
- An increased number of soft stools.
- Fine, soft hair and hair loss
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
There is no prevention to this disease, and if it is not treated it can lead to atrial fibrillation, osteoporosis, and a life-threatening condition called thyroid storm. To treat Hypothyroidism, you go on a medication called Antithyroid, or other treatments are radioactive iodine, and surgery. The treatments may reduce or eliminate the symptoms, but there is still a possibility that the disease will return after a given time, so the victim of the disease should be checked regularly.
